Program Outline

Up to 20 students per year
1 year instruction (32credits)
4 months research topic (9 credits) 

 

Courses 

Modules comprising 3 weeks of theory and practical (30 hours lectures, 30 hours practicals), 4 days revision time for exam on 5th day of final week. Courses are taught by visiting lecturers highly experienced in the oil industry (either academically, through consulting, and/or through direct employment), together with local Chiang Mai University staff.

Training in the use of commercial industry software is a key part of the program. Students will gain experience in software related to seismic acquisition and processing, as well as many facets of seismic interpretation and integration of well data with seismic data. Geological aspects of the course are designed to improve understanding and interpretation of the geophysical data, and to prepare the students for the integrated approach to Earth Science problems required by the petroleum industry. 

Communication skills are very important in the petroleum industry, both as presentation skills, and the use of English as the international language. Students are prepared through formal and informal presentations, writing, and non-credit oral and written English courses.

Individual Research Project 

Each student must undertake a 4 month research project of petroleum geophysics. The results are documented as a written report (approximately 5000 words), and a 15 minute oral presentation. The project may involve acquisition of new data, geophysical analysis of existing data, investigation of geophysical techniques, as well as interpretation of geophysical data. While the program has access to some 2D and 3D seismic data, and well data that can be used in research projects, students are encouraged to bring their own data if possible.
